Hawaiian Tribal Honu
The honu, or hawaiian green sea turtle, is considered to be a symbol of good luck. Long revered by Hawaiians as a guardian spirit, or amakua, they were listed as an endangered species in 1978. Today it is still illegal to capture or kill them. To do so may incur fines and jail time. As a protected species, you can sometimes see the honu frolicking in the waves at the beach.
