Petroglyph Canoe Paddler

The Hawaiian culture has long had an intimate relationship and respect for the ocean. Ancient Hawaiians first settled in the islands, traveling from the Marquesas islands some 2000 miles away. Navigating by the migration patterns of birds, they came in canoes filled with items essential for their survival. They consisted of skilled navigators, fishermen, and canoe builders, and not only survived, but thrived. Since then, the art of canoe paddling has evolved, but has always been a part of Hawaii’s history and way of life. Today, canoe paddling is a popular sport.
