Petroglyph Canoe

The Hawaiian culture has long had an intimate relationship and respect for the ocean. Ancient Hawaiians first settled in the islands, traveling from the Marquesas islands some 2000 miles away. Navigating by the migration patterns of birds, they came in canoes filled with items essential for their survival. Their people consisted of skilled navigators, fishermen, and canoe builders. Against all odds, the Hawaiian people thrived. The canoe has always been a part of Hawaii’s history and way of life. Today, canoe paddling is a popular sport, which has spawned canoe clubs and races.
